Information for Parents

We aim to provide the highest quality careers education, independent advice and guidance possible to raise the aspirations of our pupils and ensure they reach their full potential.

We help students to:

  • find out about careers and the world of work
  • develop employability skills
  • take responsibility for planning their own career pathway

in a variety of ways including

  • PSHE lessons and tutor time work
  • assemblies
  • visits to and from employers, colleges and universities
  • visiting speakers
  • careers interviews
  • activities delivered within curriculum areas.
  • Year 10 work experience

Our careers offer is revised annually and sent to parents/carers in September. Full details can be found in the Pupil Entitlement Booklet.

Our qualified careers adviser, Penny Hudson, provides independent advice and guidance to pupils at key points throughout their time at Hurworth. All pupils in year 11 will have at least one meeting with Penny but any pupil or parent can request an appointment if they feel it is necessary.

In addition, there are drop in sessions available for all pupils in the Careers Hub. The Hub is open every lunchtime from 12.30pm to 1.15pm.College liaison staff and support workers from Job Centre Plus visit on a regular basis.

Parents are welcome to contact Penny by phone or come into school by appointment to discuss their child’s post-16 options.

All pupils in year 11 will have at least one meeting with Gill but any pupil or parent can request an appointment if they feel it is necessary. In addition, there are drop in sessions for pupils on a Wednesday lunch time from 12.15 pm when no appointment is needed. Parents are welcome to contact Gill by phone or come into school by appointment to discuss their child’s post-16 options.

James Raw is responsible for key stage 4/5 transition. His aim is to ensure that all pupils make a successful transition to their chosen college or employment when they leave Longfield. His work includes coordinating the post-16 options evening, working with local colleges and employers, supporting tutors in delivering the careers elements of the PSHE programme and managing the work experience programme with Gill.
