Information
Careers Education Advice and Guidance at Hurworth School has clear objectives. We look to enable our pupils to:
- Develop themselves and their aspirations through careers and work related education
- Find out about careers and the world of work, building strong connections with employers
- Develop skills for career well-being and employability
Our whole school approach to careers is guided by the eight Gatsby benchmarks of Good Career Guidance.
Hurworth School works with Colleges, Universities (Future Me) and Employers to ensure that our pupils’ aspirations are fulfilled. Careers activities are supported by Penny Hudson, a qualified independent Careers Advisor. Penny also undertakes 1:1 guidance interviews and is a point of reference and support for all pupils.
Full details of the Careers curriculum can be found in the Careers Policy below.

Termly reviews of careers provision, against the Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Practice, take place with a Careers and Enterprise co-ordinator from the Tees Valley Careers Hub. This is part of the Tees Valley Combined Authority. These reviews can be attended by our Careers Business Champion. This is currently Debbie Inglett from MHT Technology Ltd. The school governor (responsible for Careers) is also invited to attend.
Hurworth School actively engage with Tees Valley Careers Hub, accessing conferences & training. Hurworth School utilise the Compass+ evaluation tool. This allows the Careers Lead to evaluate careers activity against the eight benchmarks of best practice – known as the Gatsby Benchmarks. Students complete the Future Skills Questionnaire in Years 7, 9 and 11 .
The Future Skills Questionnaire, often referred to as FSQ, has been designed to capture student voice and gives students an opportunity to reflect on their career-related knowledge and skills. Student perception can be gathered and easily reviewed, to help evaluate and develop the careers programme, ensuring that students are effectively supported to make well-informed decisions about their next steps.
These evaluation tools were built in partnership with the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and further information can be found on this link .
